As I am using thread and painting directly onto material I thought it would be beneficial to look at textile artists as well as painters. Louise Baldwin is a textile artist who uses portraiture within her work. The portraits take centre stage while patterns, colours and different styles surround the face. Baldwin portrays a story in her work, and uses stitch and colour effectively. I find Baldwin’s work influential because she is conveying her own experiences and linking them with her portrait. Her work reflects her everyday, mundane experiences but records them in a way that makes the mundane beautiful. The little things that we oversee at the time, but for some reason they may resonate with us. Although Baldwin’s work is focused on embroidery, and mine is focused on watercolour I like the effect and everyday experiences Baldwin conveys with her work.
