Joseph Cornell

Joseph Cornell’s boxes have had an influential effect on my own box- like work. His idea and concept behind them is how I feel about mine; the objects and materials evoking memories, and also different associations than what the object is known for. This links in work by Marcel Duchamp- readymades. Normal everyday objects that have been specifically selected and altered slightly to create a new meaning.

I enjoy looking at Cornell’s boxes because each object, placement, material has been made to be a certain way – it’s interesting to try and work out why and also to see new details each time I view it. Cornell includes words and letters into his work which is also an attractive component to me, I think words along with objects or drawings are very powerful.
