Cave art and hypnagogic imagery

At the start of my subject project, I looked into the art on cave walls from thousands of years ago. Back then I was focussing on the hand-prints that were painted on the walls, I didn’t realise the importance of the surrounding art. I wasn’t consciously looking at the whole thing. The patterns on the walls that could be a result of of hypnagogic imagery.

According to this theory, these patterns were the result of hallucinations. The caves were very dark, and after a while when our eyes are subjected to such darkness and nothing to see, they create their own imagery. We think these patterns are what each individual saw.
