I like the body in art because it represents so much. In terms of identity, it shows how different everybody is. I like pointing out peoples secrets, insecurities, marks, scars, freckles, fat and bones. The back is particularly important to me in terms of the body and identity. Each back is different, each back has different dips, different hard edges and soft curves, birth marks/scars, tension and muscle mass. We hold a lot in our back, it can tell you about what the person is like, how stressed they are, how they hold themselves, how they feel. It also is a sensuous body part, it has shadows and depth which conveys hidden parts of the body/person.
The back, particularly for a woman, is only really on show during certain moments- by having your back, an almost private area, on show to strangers is kind of a vulnerable thing.
